There's an ancient stoic prayer:
ta eph'hemin, ta ouk eph'hemin,
which means -
"what's up to us, what's not up to us."
The modern serenity prayer seems to be inspired by this very stoic prayer -
"God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
and Wisdom to know the difference."
